The McCain Doctrine

Newly minted Presidential candidate John Edwards today showed his political prowess and willingness to play hardball. In an interview on ABC's This Week, Edwards took on Republican frontrunner John McCain:

"I actually, myself, believe that this idea of surging troops, escalating the war -- what Senator McCain has been talking about -- what I would call now the McCain doctrine ... (is) dead wrong," said Edwards.

Some of the criticism that progressives have had with an Edwards candidacy is that he is "too soft." This direct challenge to McCain should help quell some of those concerns. That it is also couched in terms of ending the war in Iraq should also further his credibility with progressives.

This tactic should also show that Edwards is in this to win it. I'll be looking forward to how this will play out. So far, there's no comment from McCain.

I saw parts of the interview..I didn't realize Edwards was being interviewed unitl it was well into the interview.

I was pleased with what I heard except the part of his opposition to same sex marriage and I loved how Elizabeth Edwards, whom I see as a more nuanced and smart campaigner (maybe more so then John Edwards) and said that (as she nuanced it) that she was raised in an ecclectic family surroundings so same sex marriage not such a shock and her daughter's generation saw it as not an issue but a reality to be...John said his religious upbringing as a Southern Baptist meant he wasn't quite there yet on the issue.

My search of Senator Clinton's and Obama's positions are they oppose same sex marriage but all 3 support civil unions.

I am very pleased with Edwards so far..I hope that on GLBT issues he also opposes "don't ask/don't tell" and wants it repealed.

I will be interested in your view points based upon being from South Carolina and how Edwards and the others are perceived in the South.

I am also wondering of Bill Richardson gets in the race.

Good for Eswards. McCain who is seen by some as a centrist has some very conservative views. He also has a very bad temper and can get quite personal and vicious. We need a candidate or two who can go toe to toe with him, without blinking.

Am really glad that John Edwards was able to hang the name "The McCain Doctrine" on this upcoming disaster the President is determined to perpetrate on the American people. That way, when it fails as it assuredly will, blame will fall squarely in the lap of the now Bush lap-dog McCain.

Even though I voted for Edwards in the 2004 primary I didn't think he had the cojones to play political hardball. It's so difficult to find a Democrat with guts that it will be fun to see if Mr. Edwards has shot his wad or if there's more fight to come.
